“The Tyrant Katana”
Blending the timeless aesthetic and power of the Katana with the best of modern materials and manufacturing, finished to perfection by hand with the human touch.
As a bladesmith, there is no design more enduring or inspiring than the Katana. Its the only sword the average person knows by name. A blade so compelling, so beautiful, and so brutally functional that it held its place on the hip of the Samurai class for over 7 centuries. Unchanged, unadulterated, only evolving in beauty and aesthetics through the ages. From the date the first Katana was forged, entire civilizations have risen and fallen, yet the Katana remains. a masterpiece of design and craftsmanship. Timeless.
When the concept for a Katana came to me, I knew it couldn’t be just any project. I had to do this sword justice. It had to perform. It had to be made from the best materials. It had embody the soul of the blade and be a work that would give proper reverence to such a significant and historical piece.
Working from the designs of legendary makers spanning a period of over 700 years, the Tyrant Katana takes cues from some of the greatest swordsmiths to ever live.
Featuring a 28.5in tapered blade with a tapered fuller, and full coffin handle construction with a steel Tsuba and Kashira, the Tyrant Katana blends a fully traditional blade shape with with the highest quality super steel, and a heavy duty modern handle construction that preserves the long standing Katana aesthetic.
And when it comes to performance, lets just say this thing will cut. We spent a tremendous amount of time getting every aspect of the center of balance and center of percussion perfected for smooth, vibration free cuts and snappy handling while still packing huge power.
Becoming my “Magnum Opus”
Producing a Katana is no small undertaking. Producing one from Z Tuff tool steel and a robust CNC milled full coffin handle assembly is another task entirely. With this project, there was simply no way to cut cost. It was going to be an expensive blade, so I decided to embrace it and go all in.
“Magnum Opus.” A phrase we are all familiar with, meaning an artist or craftsman’s great and enduring work for which they are remembered.
As I was designing this blade, I was moved by the sheer number of 600+ year old Katanas still in existence, unblemished, looking as fresh and new as they day they were made. The Katana was held in such great reverence, that countless generations cared for, maintained, and passed on to their own children in an unbroken lineage, the swords of their distant ancestors. There is nothing else in our modern world that commands such deep respect.
With this in mind, I had to approach this project with that sense of reverance. It had to be an ode to the timeless and enduring Katanas before it. If I was going to do this project justice, I had to make something that I could present to the bladesmiths of old and tell them unflinchingly, that this is my best work.
For this project, I am cutting no corners, taking no shortcuts, and will be getting to know each and every one of these blades personally as I work through them. The Tyrant Katana will be blending the absolute highest level of aerospace grade CNC milling with extensive hand finishing to create, what I hope, will be something truly special.
